A discussion took place on the desirability of making collections from playeis on special occasions for grcenkcepers, and it was resolved that no such collections bo made unless specially authorised by the executive. A communication was received from the Dunedin town clerk intimating that the council could not see its way at, present to remit rates on any playing areas. The letter was received, with the comment that nothing further apparently could bo done. Mr Clutlia Mackenzie, M.P., on behalf of the Sir Arthur Pearson memorial fund to aid the blind people of New Zealand, appealed to the centre for assistance by means of a Tournament, carnival, or benefit match.—lt was resolved to simply receive the letter, as bowlers individually would bo appealed* to on the matter. Several accounts were passed for payment, satisfaction being expressed at the reduction in the charges for catering as carried out by Mr J. C. The council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association resolved to-night that. a. request, ho sent to the Australasian Union that a mail vote bo taken, on tho question of holding the Australian v. New Zealand championships alternately in Australia and New Zealand every second year, the programme to bo limited to nine or ten events. This was mutually agreed upon, the cost of transport to be borne by the, visiting teams, and the contests to take the place of tho present New Zealand cl iampi one 1) i ps. MINIATURE RIFLE SHOOTING. The Portobello Miniature, Rifle Club held its usual shooting competition on Saturday. The weather was perfect, and some good shooting resulted. Messrs H. Allan (34, 54, and 33) and W. G. Smith (35, 55, and 31) standing out by themselves. The ranges were 50, 100, and 150 yards. Tho following were the scores: 11, Allan 101, W. G. Smith 101, J. J. M'Gartnev 92. J. Clark 92, Miss N. Allan 91, W. Ford 89, S. Stiller 88, W. Smith 04, T. Dickson 79. LAWN TENNIS. At the Sydney carnival yesterday Aitlcen was the only New Zealander in action who .received, a forfeit in the singles match. He lost his doubles with Graham against Anderson and bpratt, 6-8, 4-6, 6-2, 5-7. Ait-ken failed to dovetail with hie partner's play, but was responsible for the lion’s share of the work. He has not- yet struck form, but he excelled in driving and smashing. The victors’ play was characterised by steadiness. Anderson is a brother of the Davis Cup representative. Tho New Zealand ladies will lake part in the championships to-day. GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP. The Council of the New Zealand Golf Association definitely decided last night that the championship tournament, to bo held in Palmerston North, should common co on Monday, .September 11. As regards qualifying for tho amateur championship, it 'was decided that the whole of the four rounds o! the open championship should also be qualifying rounds for the amateur championship, the best eisteen to qualify, all games in the play-off to be thirty-six holes. The entries for tho amateur championship are to ho strictly limited to sixty-four, and no competitor whose middle handicap is more than eight rnav enter.
