RUSSIAN FAMINE FUND

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. A meeting of tho executive of the Ruseian famine and starving children of Europe fund was held yesterday afternoon, the mayor (Mr J. S. Douglas) presiding. The Chairman reported that lie had communicated with the mayors and chairmen of local bodies from Oamaru to Gore, and also with Those of Central Otago. Ho had wired the Mayor of Invercargill inviting co-operation in a united Otago and South- ’ land effort. Each of the committees api pointed had, met, with tho result that a complete programme had been drawn I up. He expressed his appreciation of the earnest manner in which the conveners, along with their respective committees, ,had entered into the work. The campaign would commence next Sunday, when special church services would bo held throughout. Otago. The street collection would take place on Friday, May 5. Ho would like to emphasise tho point that the money collected would he sent by tho town clerk to the .Minister of Internal Affairs, who would forward it to the High Commissioner. Tho distribution would be controlled by a joint committee of tho j Red Cross and the Order of St. John, the Lord Mayor of London, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Mr Lloyd George, and other prominent people in England, i Canon Nevil! and'the Rev. Rugby Pratt 1 spoke of the urgent need of raising money for the fund. Mr Inglis Wright submitted the report of tho Publicity Committee, which (he said) had arranged for supplying detailed : information to tho churches and the Press throughout Qdngo. The Rev. Mr Jupp reported that the Church Committee had met. and that everything was in order for the churches making an appeal next Sunday. The churches would also assist in the street collections. Bishop Richards had promised that the Angli an clergy would give every assistance. Mr Allnutt, on behalf of the Schools’ Committee, reported tiiat it did not approve of the children canvassing for money, ; but that it was in entire sympathy with | the movement, and that the children would assist by giving something in kind for the street sale on the Friday. Mr C- Speight reported on the nrrange- ■ ments for the street collection, and said that it was also proposed to make a house-to-house canvass of the suburbs. Mr Hugh Mitchell, on behalf o! tho Country Committee, said that it had got into touch with all the country districts, which had received a copy of tho circular sent out by the mayor. Cr Begg, on behalf of the Finance Committee, said it was considered that the heat effort to bo made would be by way of the street collection. The Rev, Mr Diamond had been associated with tiro committee, and it was proposed to wait on a number of citizens with a view to soliciting their support and sympathy. On the motion of the Rev. Mr Diamond, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to tho. mayor for the manner in which ho had taken up the movement.
