ASSAULT ON TAXI-DRIVER
“ELEMENT OF MURDER.” HIT ON HEAD WITH STICK. “This is a very bad case; just such a case as turns to tragedy,' remarked Mr Poynton, S.M., at Auckland' Police Court on Monday in passing sentence on two young men —Wi Pori (a Maori) and Allan Edward Barron —-who were found guilty
of 'having assaulted a taxi-driver bv flitting him on the head from behind in the darkness.
The Magistrate said there was no doubt the two men combined to take down tho taxi-driver after having a good ride. They had a stick to hit the driver if he chased them to demand a fare. Tho Maori, however, was too impulsive, and acted too quickly. Both accused wore bad characters, and.,tho case had the elements of a murder in it. If the driver had resisted he would have been ' murdered:. Pori was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment and Barron to ono month’s imprisonment, both sentences to be cumulative with terms the men are now serving.
