Extensive alterations are being made at Springfield in connection with the completion of the Midland Railway. About fifty or sixty men with an engine and trucks have, been employed' for some time. It has been necessary to make a deviation for a distance of about a mile and n-half, commencing a little above the school and joining the existing line near the top of the cutting on the south bank of the Kawai River. The formation work in connection with the deviation and the station yard is now almost completed. A new .station, having a .platform eight chains long, is to be built about twelve chains north of the present Springfield station. Ample land has been acquired for the needs of a large marshalling station, and at present six lines of track have been laid. Concrete foundations have been laid down for an engine shed capable of accommodating four engines, with provision for enlargement when necessary. It is understood (states the ‘ Lyttelton Times ’) that the Railway Department intends building a number of houses to accommodate the staff that will be required for a, largo and busy station,
