Save for tho blistering of paint on the ventilators and on tho ship's side, the steamer Hatipara bears no visible evidence of tho fire which broke out in No. 1 hold on Friday night while she was loading at tho King's wharf, Wellington. From inside appearances the heat must have been great, as the buckled state of the flooring of the 'tween decks shows. The scene at the steamer's side on Saturday morning was reminiscent of flax fires of former years. The half-burnt bales of flax and wool were being discharged from the still smouldering hold, and were being clumped on tho wharf, preparatory to reconditioning. Occasionally a bale would burst into flames in the fresh air, but the fire would be quickly suppressed. The Hatipara loaded the greater portion of her cargo at Timaru, Port Chalmers, and Lyttelton. She is a steel twin screw steamer of 8,182 tons gross register, and was built in Japan in 1918. Sho was formerly known as the War. Lance, but was later acquired by the B.L Steam Company and renamed Hatipara.
