REV W. SAUNDERS'S CONDEMNATION. [Specui, to ras 'Stab."J CHRISTCHURCH, March 21. The practice of coursing hares in enclosures and shooting birds from traps was tho subject of an address by the Rev. W. Saunders (Dunedin) afc last nights meeting of the Council of Christian Congregations. In condemning coursing, Mr Saunders said he considered that the sport was degrading and a relic of bygone days, when bullbaitlng and coclriightmg were popular ■ sports. Ho thought that candidates for Parliament should Le asked to state their opinions on the,,practice. With regard to the so-called sport of pigeon shooting, it had been urged tliat the birds wcro a source of annoyance to farmers. However, he had boen told that the pitrcons used in New Zealand for such purposes wero procured from bird tanciers, and that the sport was inhuman. % _ Mr Saunders was thanked for his instructive address, and it was decided to leave the matter to the executive to take such action as it thought fit.
