FIRE ON STEAMER HATIPARA
PORTION OF CARGO DESTROYED.

WELLINGTON, March 18.
Tlio steamer Hatipara, when loading at tho King’s wharf, was noticed to be on fire in No. 1 hold at 9.30 last night. Tho fire brigade has the outbreak in hand. With tho assistance of tho pumps of tho tug Terawhiti, tho fire brigade extinguished the outbreak on tho Hatipara at 4 a.m. to-day. It was found necessary to flood the hold, wherein there is now 15ft of water. About COO bales of flax and a small quantity of wool and general cargo lias been destroyed. The cause of the fire, which started amongst the general cargo in No. 1 lower hold about 9 o’clock lestnight, is unknown.
