Saturday, October 15. (Before Mr 11. Y. Widdowson, S.M.) SIX MONTHS FOB THEFT. Arthur Ernest Jv.lc, an elderly man, pleaded guilty to (1) stealing a pair of trousers valued at £3 10s and a hat valued at £1 15s, the property of Harold Boyd Eyall; and (2) stealing a pillow case valued at 2fi Cd, the property of David Men therstono. Chief-detective Bishop stated that between 3 and 4 o’clock on Thursday tho accused was found upstairs in the Oban Hotel, and ordered out. Later in tho day Mr Rvall, a boarder, discovered that a pair of trousers arid a hat were missing from his room. In regard to tho second charge, tho accused obtained, money from a lady to stay at ho City Buffet, and while "he was "tho.ro ha stoic tho pillow case. Detectives Palmer and Lean made inquiries, and arrested accused, who was wearing the ctolen trousers and hat. The pillow "case ho cut up and made a scarf of it. His Worship : What is his general character? Chief-delective Bishop : It is bad, sir. Accused asked for a chance. He would go to the country and fret work shearing. "In reply to His Worship .accused admitted that some years ago ho had been convicted of fake pretences, aggravated assault, and breaches of a prohibition order. On tho first charge accused was sentenced to six months' imprisonment, and on the second charge In one month, the sentences to bs concurrent.
