A meal, the cost of which, like that of Cleopatra's draught of dissolved pcarls, war, out of all proportion to any nourishment it could possibly afford, was swallowed by Gertrude Neumann, a parlormaid at Berlin. Tho collector found the vase, and just as he was about, to confiscate (he jewel:. Gertrude popped them into hoc mouth and swallowed them in one comprehensive gulp. The matter was finally settled amicably by the collector persuading Gertrude to visit a chemist, and’ disgorge her booty with the help of a. strong emetic.
