PORT CHALMERS ROWING CLUB

There was a good attendance of members at the forty-fifth annual meeting of this club yesterday evening. As the president (Mr J. M. Stevenson) was unable to be present, Mr P. Lightbounve, vice-president, was voted to the chair. The annual report showed that the past season had been a very successful one in every respect. The credit balance was £6l 15s lOd, some £l6 better than was shown at the; previous annual meeting. Several large accounts were paid during the season; in fact, one account for oars and sculls taking the whole of last year’s balance. Against this was received £95 Is lid in prize money from the various regattas, this placing the club in a strong position financially. The practice boats required , the usual minor repairs to make them fit fox the coming season. As regarded the racing boats, the four-oared boat, which was purchased last year, was in perfect condition, and as there had been ordered a double-sculler and a pair-oared boat from Messrs Jerome and Sons, (Melbourne, which were to be delivered by the end of November, the racing plant would be sufficient for all requirements. The only chib race rowed was for the President Fours, tho winning crew being J, Glengarry (stroke), H. Pritchard (5), G. Bootten (2), J. Brennan (bow). The annual social was held last month in tho Druids’ Hall, and proved very enjoyable. On behalf of the Otago Rowing Association, Mr M. Priest presented the club with the following trophies won during the season:— Premiership shield, senior cup, junior enp, maiden cup, White memorial trophy, and the Renwick cup. As this list showed, the dub had the distinction of winning every cup and trophy which the association had for competition. In the absence of the president (Mr J. M‘D. Stevenson) Mr J. Collier presented the club trophies and also made a presentation to each of the three coxswains. Messrs A. Simmonda and

J. Colthorpe were complimented on the manner in which they carried out their duties as M.C.s. The committee expressed its regret at the loss of its late captain, Mr J. Glengarry, who was an untiring worker in the interests of the club, and never missed an opportunity of assisting in its progress. On the eve of his departure a small presentation was tendered to himself and family as a mark of the esteem in which they were held by all the club members. The crews representing the club at the various regattas considerable success. Special mention should be made of the maiden crew, who were succesfol in winning five races for as many starts. This crew journeyed to Christchurch, -and had the honor of winning a double event—Maiden and Junior Fours. Mr R. Thompson, who coached this crew, deserved every credit. The membership totalled 106—52 active, 46 honorary, and 8 life members. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the Chairman said the balance-sheet was as satisfactory as a club of its size could wish. There was a nice little nest egg of £6l to start the season with, but as two new- boats were ordered and had yet to be paid for members should not, delay in paying their subscriptions. Members endeavor to regain the club’s high position of a few years ago in rowing. The crews did remarkably well last season, especially the maiden crew, who won the* junior championship race at Christchurch. Had this crew Seen entered for the seniors at Queenstown, and the race been rowed, the crew would probably have jjbh maiden, junior, and senior events in. one season. Unfortunately the crew could not be kept together for this season. Mr Glengarry, who had gone to the North Island, would be missed at the shed, and he_ should be made a life member in recognition of past services. Young members should introduce new members. Mr W. Brailey seconded the adoption oi the report (which was adopted), and commented on the past season’s successes, wishing the club a similarly successful season this year. The election of office-bearers resulted
