FINIS: AUSSIES' TOUR

PLAYED, 38; WON, 22; LOST, 2. {By Onlooksk.] The tour, which terminated at Scarborough on Saturday, should be bracketed with Darling’s 1902 team aa the most successful cricket invasion of England. To smphaeise this contention, I append the results of all the eleven-a-side matches in which tho Aussics have been participants m English soil:—*

A fortnight ago it looked as.though the present invaders were going through with a clean sheet. Their first reverse was encountered at Eastbourne nt the hands of an eleven captained by AlacLaren. The Englishmen were only second-rate amateurs, and when they were dismissed in the first strike for a miserable 43 on a good wicket tho result was, no doubt, viewed so certain that unnecessary risks wore taken. But the final ditch was a different proposition. C. I. Thornton put in an eleven which commanded the utmost respect. A battle royal was fought, and the last Australian was dismissed almost on the call of time, the second reverse of the tour thus being inflicted on Armstrong’s men. The tour has justly been described as a record-breaking one. Never-before have so many centuries been made by an Australian travelling band ; four of the bowlers have taken over 100 wickets; Bardsley has accomplished the marvellous task of making over 2.000 runs in each of his three visits to England; and both Macartney and Bafdsley have established fresh averages far the tour, with 58.37 and 55.45 respectively, the best hitherto. being Barnsley’s 51.95 in 1912, when he scored 2,441 runs in fiftythree innings, sis times not out, The incomparable Trampcr holds the greatest aggregate (2,570), made in 1902. Armstrong .now equals Gillen's record of making 1,000 runs and taking 100 wickets or over on ’three occasions. These performances may worthily bo set out; -Giffen— Runs , Wickets Tear. Made. Trumble (1899), with 1,186 runs and 142 wickets. The team return to Australia via the Cape, playing a series of matches in South Africa.
