AVON BY Tf. MONAGHAN. . The Port Chalmers-Dunedin Road Race was held on Saturday, after a lapse oi seven years. The race was for (he Hooper Challenge Cnp, which was presented to the Dunedin Harrier Club in 1902 for! annual competition. The later years of its competition the race has been controlled bytho Otago Centre, X.Z.A.A.A. ■One of the coditions of the challenge trophy allows the competitor to choose any route from the stalling to the finishing'points, provided that he dues not go inside the railway fence. This meant that the race for the greater part traversed the road, but just after the start the competitors, on reaching the top of the hill before Sawyers Bay, made use of the short cut allowed, Leaving the 'road here, (hoy crossed the paddocks until the road at the rear of the Sawyers Bay railway station was reached. Following this road for a few hundred yards, the course once again crossed the paddocks on to the top of the Tunnel Hill. From here to the finishing point at the foot of Union street the race was along the road. The competitors lined up for the start at tiie foot of George street, Port Chalmers, at 5.30 p.m., when the limit mat;, Monaghan, was despatched. The field, which numbered fifteen competitors in all, were sent oft' on their journey in order of their handicaps. The scratch man started n. few minutes before the train which took the officials and spectators to the finishing point at Pelichet Bay. The race, as viewed from Sawyers Bay. showed that the limit man had made good use of his handicap, being then about sCyds ahead of MTlroy, who was the same distance ahead of Phillips, Crossing the Sawyers Bay tunnel hill (he field was well strung out, and here the scratch man made use of a short cut and'gained considerable ground.' Passing through St. Leonards Monaghan still led, but MTlroy appeared to bo slowly gaining ground, closely followed by Dewar. Phillips had now dropped well to the rear, but Bramwell and Edmond were running strongly some 509yds behind. By this "time Frye had dosed up. and was lying in sixth place, but an ill-limed attempt to force the pace caused him to sacrifice his chances. At 4 p.m. Monaghan, running well, passed Burkes station about 150yds ahead of MTlroy, who was followed by Dewar, Bramwell, Edmond, and Frye. After passing RavenSbourne Bramwell ran into second place, and led. MTlroy and Edmond. Bramwell was now running well, but the distance had begun to tell on the remainder of the field, which was strung out over half a mile. Entering the straight for home the same order was maintained, but MTlroy had fallen back to fifth place. At the finish Monaghan’s lend wa.s such that the second man never came within challenging distance, and Monaghan breasted the tape first amid the applause of the spectators who had assembled in some considerable numbers to witness the result, —Result.— R Monaghan (St. Patrick’s), smin ... 1 VV.
