APPLE SHIPMENTS.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, In your issue of Thursday September 8, wo notice a paragraph which states that a movement is afoot to arrange for a big shipment of apples from Otago to England in the coming season. The local goes on to give further information With tins desire we supply you with the following facts:—Two years ago we endeavored to get suitable apples promised by Otago growers for a trial shipment, but met with no success, and as wo wished to ship apples wo had to secure supplies from Nelson. The results of our consignment were published in the local papers last year, and, as probably your readers will remembel - , were highly satisfactory. Now, previous to last season's supply being available, wo wrote to the Prime Minister, Mr Massey, asking him, in the event of our firm giving a guarantee to load 10,000 cases of apples at Port Chalmers or Dunedin, would he allow one of the vessels duo to load at Wellington to accept our shipment of apples from Otago ports. Unfortunately it was not possiblerto make this arrangement, and therefore wo had again to ship our apples from Wellington. The Athenic, which carried our last shipment, some 4,000 cases, made a record passage, and gave ns very much better returns than the apples carried by the Hororata. which sailed some weeks earlier. The prices. realised on London markets for the Athontic shipment are as follow; Jonathans averaged 24s sd, Monroes 25s Bd, Cox’s Orange Pippins 21s 4d. Statesman 27s lid, Stunners 2Ss lid per case. One would gather from the above that the best apple to ship : s the Stunner, but we very much doubt if the Sturmcr could he shipped as successfully as either the Jonathan or Munroe’s Favorite. In fact, we con-, sider these two apnles the best ship-, ning varieties at the, moment for the London market. Further, we think that quite a lot of really good _ shipping apnles arc available, and it behoves Otago Central growers to got busy and give those interesting themselves in the movement every encouragement. Those having good apples of either Coxes. Jonathans, Mnnroos. Cleopatrns, Nonnariels, Es’onus, Pearmains, Russets. London Pippins, Alfristnns, or early Stunners should certainly endeavor to send away their full quota by the first shipment from Otago, apples ranging in sme from 2]in to Jin being the most suitable size to shin. If onr firm can he of any assistance to growers we shall be pleased to assist. Wc are, etc., Rielly’s Central Produce Mart, Ltd. September 9.
