AUTHORITY TO CUT QUESTIONED

A protest on beliall' cf the Otahuhu Trotting Club in respect to the Racing Commission’s report was pat before the Auckland members of Parliament by a deputation of about 150 sportsmen. After the club’s case bad been fully stated, the Hon. G. J. Garland drew attention to the fact that the Commission had been set up under an amendment of the Act of 1920, and that clause 3 of the Act gave the Commission povver to extend tile present racing days, but no authority to cut away totalisator permits at present in existence. In that respect bo felt the present Commission 'bad exceeded its authority. Mr V. H. Potter, M.P., intimated that the parliamentary members present bad decided to telegraph to the Minister of Internal Affaire drawing attention to the point mentioned by the Hon. Mr Garland, and requesting that no action bo taken until Pariiarnet had considered the report. A protest against the Compiission’s recommendations regarding the Otahuhu Club has been forwarded by the North Island Trotting Horse Owners’ and Breeders' Association to the Hon. WDownio Stewart (Minister of Internal Affairs). INCREASED STAKES. The Auckland Racing Club Committee has allotted £73.100 in prize money for the ensuing season, an increase of £11.630. The allotments ;uo: Spring Meeting, £12,050; Summer Meeting, £50,750; Autumn Meeting. £13,000; Winter Meeting, £17,500. The Cup has been raised to £3,500. and the Great Northern Hurdles and Steeples to £2,500 each. In 1923-24 the Great Northern Derby will be worth £5,000. ■SWIMMING. The Hawaiian Amateur Athletic Union announces that challenges will be sent to all countries in the world asking that_ the swimming champions defend (heir titles at tho great swimming carnival next October in Hawaii.—Honolulu cable. TENNIS; DAVIS CUP. At Pittsburg both the British and Australian tenuis teams aro practising on the Alleghany County Club’s courts, on which the Davis Cup match will be played (reports an Ottawa cable). The Australians aro now acclimatised, and express confidence that they will give a hotter showing than they did in Canada. According to present plans, Anderson and Todd will play in tho doubles, and Anderson and Hawkcs will bo engaged in the first clay’s singles. Woosnam and Turnbull aro likely to play in the British doubles, and Lowe and Woosnam in the singles. GOLF. Hunter, the amateur golf champion, playing from plus 5, won the first division in tho Peace Cup > competition at North Foreland. Earl Haig, with a handicap of 17, won the second division.—London cable. HOCKEY. A meeting of the Management Committee of the Otago Hockey Association last evening was attended by Mr P. B. Foote (chairman) and Messrs J. Hogg, E. H. Caldcr, W. H. Down, T. S. Mitchell, L. Mitchell, L. Ireland, R. Hinton, F. Wilkinson, Tl. Payton, T. Hubbard, A. N. Slater, and S. Foote (secretary). Tho Southland Hockey Association wrote regretting their inability to send a representative team to Dunedin this season. A lengthy discussion took place regarding representative fixtures for •the. season, and it was finally decided to hold a trial match on Saturday next, and to enter two teams for the South Island interprovincial tournament, which is to be held at Timaru on August 20. Mr T. S. Mitchell reported that ho had completed arrangements with the manager of the Octagon Theatre for a picture benefit during August, to raise funds to encourage hockey in the primary schools.— It was decided to cancel all hockey matches on August 15 in view of the Springboks’ visit. RUGBY. The Canterbury touring team played their first match yesterday, when they met Taranaki at Hawera. The game, which practically resolved itself into a contest between the opposing forwards, ended : Canterbury, 11 points (three tries, one converted); Taranaki, 5 points (enhanced try). The score at half-time was 5-5 in favor of Taranaki.

COROGLEN’S FINE SHOWING

CHRISTCHURCH, August 4. At Riccarton yesterday Corogle.u gave one of the most brilliant displays of jumping big fences ever seen at Riccarton. Bowling along at racing pare, ho completed a circuit in Imin 58sec, which is much the fastest time put up for some time. After dome once round Coroglen was pulled on to the tan track and galloped a circuit on that, to pull up with hardly a blow. This performance was so good that Coroglen will be at a much shorter price for the National Steeplechase, and there is little" doubt that he is just as capable of tackling Riccarton country successfully as any other National candidate. ATHLETICS AND CYCLING. ANNUAL REPORT OF UNION. In its annual report the executive of the Otago branch of tho New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union .states that during tho year twenty-seven societies affiliated with the centre, and also two permits were issued. These figures show the same result as last year. Tire, number of competitors registered was 168 at 2s 6d, 295 at Is, and two at la 6d, showing a total increase of S 9 competitors for the year. Tho annual conference was held at Wellington on September 15, 1920, and tho centre was represented by Mr D. F. M‘Kay. The most important business of the meeting was the reorganising of sports meetings right throughout the Dominion. Tho financial position of tho centre is in a very satisfactory state. The year commenced with a credit balance of £27 15s lid, and closed with a. credit balance of £36 9s lOd, an increase of £8 13s lid as compared with last year.
