THREE TESTS INCLUDED

[Special io the ‘ Stae.']

CHRISTCHURCH, July 21.

The announcement that the Mew Zealand Cricket Council has definitely invited the MaryJebonc Club to send an English amateur team to the Dominion during the coming season was made to-day by Mr F. C. Rapnacl {chairman of the council). Mr Raphael said the decision was sure to be received with general satisfaction throughout the Dominion. It was originally intended, that this team should have visited Mew Zealand last year, but at the last minute it was found impossible to complete arrangements in time. Tire chief item concerning the council lias been the matter of arranging the necessary finances involved in such an expensive tour; but exceptionally favorable terms with the Australian Slates had placed the matter on a most satisfactory basis and ensured the financial success of the lour. Through the sympathetic support of the Board of Control the individual States of Mew South. Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia had offered the major percentage of the gale tor matches to Ixs played during March in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and iterth. It was proposed that dho team should leave London about the third week of October, so that it would arrive in Mow Zealand) in time to commence its tour of three months of Mew Zealand in the first week of December. Approximately eighteen matches would be played- in Mew Zealand, including three lest matches. Unfortunately, there had been a little hesitation on the part of Auckland andi Otago to join iu the guarantees towards the expense of the tour; ’ but in view of the exceptionally favorable terms now offered by Australia it was thought the council would -receive t.ho fullest support from all Quarters. “It is expected that the Marylcbono Club will arrange the most attractive side, and in view of, its Australian programme it will need to be a fairly -representative eleven,” added Mr Raphael. “With this idea in view the council has offered an additional sum for the inclusion of two leading professionals. _ T]u? Hon. Lionel Tennyson, now captaining the English eleven in the test matches at Home, was included among the first iu-ciub-e-i‘3 chosen to visit Mew Zealand last season. Tho council has specially asked 1 that lie be included for this year’s tour. Mr L. H. W. Trouglilon, whoso name has already been mentioned as likely lo captain tho si'.by is one of the most prominent men in 'English cricket to-dav.
