WASHIHGTON CONFERENCE

MR HUGHES’S' OPINIONS. EVERYTHING DEPENDS ON PACIFIC. Pres* Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, July 2L (Received July 22, at 10.40 a.m.) Speaking as the guest of the American Luncheon Club at the Savoy Hotel, Mr Hughes said that if the Washington Conference is not to produce tho same Dead Sea fruit as the League of Nations it must take cognisance of those principles which mean much between men and between nations. Certainly it cannot hope to get what tiro world desires out' of it, unless tho great Pacific problems are faced frankly and cleared out of tho way. The great object of tho Conference is to- got America, Japan, and Britain to disarm; but this will be impossible until the disturbing factors in tho Pacific are removed. A conference to discuss these questions must be held first, and’on that conference Australia and New Zealand must bo I'epresented.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
