CONCILIATION COUNCIL
TAILORESSES’ DISPUTE. Mr W. H. Hagger (Conciliation Commissioner) heard the tailoresses and other female trade employees’ dispute yesterday afternoon. The assessors for the union were Misses Forsyth and Neil and Mr J. T. Paul, with Aliss Eunciman as agent, and for the employers Messrs F. Arthur, H. Stokes, and H. Paterson, with Mr A. S. Cookson as agent. The union asked that a week’s work should not ” exceed forty-four hours, and that the minimum wage for workers, except pieceworkers, including machinists and tailoresses on ladies’ work, be at the rate of £2 10s per week. The counterproposals were the existing award, with an alteration of the proportion of apprentices clause to fix the proportion at one apprentice to two journeymen .or fraction of the first two. The present minimum wage is £2, with the 5s bonus additional. An agreement was reached on a number of non-contenticus clauses, and the matters of wages and term of award were held over for a further conference between the parties.
