OBITUARY

The death occurred on Monday at his residence, Hanover street, Dunediii, of Mr John Black, aged 82. Born in County iviavo, Ireland, lie came out to New Zealand while a young man. and after following the gold rushes in Central Otago for some time he settled down to the occupation of storckeeping at Allanton, where n« remained until three years ago.' During His long stay at Allanton Mr Black made a wide circle of friends, and earned the respect of everyone in the district. The late Mr Black, who brought up a large family, is survived by a widow, three sons, and seven daughters. An old resident of Napier. Mr Samuel l arnell died yesterday afternoon, at tho ago ot 88 years. Deceased, who was Mayor in 1904 and 1905. wa. s born in Nottinghamshire and reached Auckland in the ship Gadnoeus in 1862. He resided in Auckland till 1865, when he went to the goldfields at Hokitika. Later he went into business as a photographer at Nelson and at Auckland, and went to Napier in 1869 Deceased won the Napier seat in the Liberal Party's interest in 1894. He was also, a member of local bodies and was a. freemason.

He was born at Bristol, England. The late Mr M'Leod commenced m business with his father at Martinborough, and subsequently founded the firm of M'Leod and Sons—a business whicn has progressed considerably since its formation into a. company and extension to Wellington about 13 years ago. The deceased leaves a widow'and a family of live young children.
