While im dock the Waikana had new propellers fitted, whicn are expected to rive her an increase in speed, and thus enable her to maintain a regular time-table. In case of accident, lifebuoys and lifebelts are well distributed about tho decks, the belts being stored in boxed seats on the upper deck fore and affc, and also in racks in both cabins. The engines and electrical fittings have been thoroughly overhauled, and the boat to-day is in first-class order, the company having spared no expense in puttin» everything in thorough condition for the comfort of travellers.

The Waireka is at present undergoing an extensive overhaul at Port Chalmers, and is expected to be ready to assist in the service, if needed, in five or six weeks’ time.
