ARBITRATION COURT

THIRD DAY—THURSDAY. The Arbitration Court resumed their sittin*; this morning, His Honor Mr. Justice Stringer presiding. TIMBER YARDS DISPUTE. In the timber yards and saw-mills employees’ dispute, in which a complete agreement was come to, Mr Hiram Hunter (of Christchuidh) appeared for the union and Mr A. S. Cookson for the employers. Mr Hunter asked that the agreement be made into an award. Mr/Cookson said he had no objection, but mentioned that he had a number of applications for exemptions. The union asked that Love and Co. and Greig and Co. be added to the award. Mr Cookson said the parties opposed the application. He asked for exemptions on Denali of the following firmsßruce Railway and Coal Company, Crown Milling Company, Hudson and Co., Hintons Ltd.. Irvine and Stevenson, Kempt-home and Prosser, ul Gavins, Ltd., Phoenix Company, Powley and Co., Taieri and Peninsula Milk Supply Company, Tonkin’s Breezing Works, and the Waitafci Dairy Company. . Mr Hunter said that the casomaking industry was altogether a new one. Although some firms had been granted exemption on previous occasions, tho union had always strongly opposed them being exempted, because the workers were entitled to the benefits of the Act. They had never heard any good reason why these firms should be exThe industry was growing up, and it-'the firms thsir own cases were going to be granted exemption then it would be detrimental to those firms who had embarked upon the industry and invested their capital in it. The unions from one end of the country to tho other strongly opposed the granting of exemptions by the Court. Up to now the only reason for objection by those applying was purely a sentimental one. Most of the firms had plants for the manufacture of cases. Mr Hunter then proceeded to call evidence.

After hearing evidence on both sides the Court decided to exempt from the provisions of the award the Bruce Railway Company, Hintons, Ltd., M'Gavin and Co., Powley and Co., Tonkin’s Breezing Works, Waitaki Dairy Company, Irvine and Stevenson, and W. Greig and Co. The other cases were deferred for consideration.
