M'SWEENEY’S LONG PAST.
MEDICAL OPINION SCEPTICAL.
LONDON, October 12. Alderman MlSweeney has completed a 61 days’ hanger strike at Brixten Prison, most of the time being spent in bed. He has been carefully nursed, and bodily heat has been maintained by hot-water bottles. The prison authorities state that he may last another month, and declare that there is no evidence that he has taken nourishment; but outside medical opinion is sceptical, especially as his condition shows comparatively little wastage and his temperature is almost normal. M’Sweeney drinks much water, and also a saline mixture for-the purification of the blood. It ls . unofficially suggested that relatives who visit him daily give him spirits, wine, and fruit juices. Twelve hunger strikers in Cork Prison have completed a fast of 63 days.—A. and N.Z. Cable. IRRITATION AND OUTRAGES. LONDON, October 13. There is indignation in Belfast business circles at the report, that a moratorium is being arranged. This is entirely due to Sinn Feiners, whose object is to impair credit in Belfast. The officers killed at Drumconda include ■Major Smyth, brother of Commissioner Smyth, who was murdered in Cork in July. The officers were apparently shot by two men hiding in Professor Cardan’s house. The professor escaped.—A. and N..Z Cable. RAID ON POLICE BARRACKS. LONDON, October 13. (Received October 14, at 9 a.m.) ■Forty armed Sinn Peiners attacked the Dnnmanway police barracks with rifles, revolvers, and bombs at 1 o’dock in the morning. The garrison numbered 31. The attackers’ casualties are unknown.— A. and N.Z. Cable. DUBLIN STRIKE SETTLED. LONDON, October 13. (Received October 14, at 9.10 a.m.) The dripping strike at Dublin has been Settled.
