An interesting appointment in connection with Parliament was arranged today, Mr E. W. Kane, Assistant Clerk, receiving the position of Clerk of the House of Representatives, made vacant through Sir Lowe, the former holder, becoming Clerk to Parliament and taking the chief position on the Legislative Council staff, formerly held by the lat6 Mr Stowe. •There are to be five or six appointments to the Legislative Council, and the Government, in addition to the usual embarrassment due to a plethora of candidates, have to consider certain promises made by the National Cabinet. In reply to a question whether the committee of the Imperial Defence are likely to meet shortly in accordance with tho hope expressed by British Ministers, Sir Massey said he does not anticipate any meeting being convened this year. The Opposition will hold a caucus early, and it is whispered that one of their first moves will be to table a- want of con iidence motion, with the object of putting new members "on side " right away. If this course be pursued, a fortnight's profitless debate may be anticipated.
