(Received Juno 1, at 11.5 a.m.) In welcoming tho West. Indian delegates to tho conference nt Ottawa for closer trade relations with Canada the -Duke- of Devonshire (Governor-General) pointed out that the real question at issue was that- of making the future of tho Empire secure. If the Empirn were sell-supporting its security would be unquestionable. Colonel Amery, representing tho Colonial Office, emphasised tho Imperial aspect of the conference, and stud he hoped that the outcome would bo a widening of the existing trade Preference between tho Dominion- and tho west Indies. The Hon. E. St. John Branch, K.C., Attorney-General for Jamaica, stated that the colony was "prepared to enter whole-heartedly into any great scheme for the consolidation of the Empire. Representatives from all the West Indies are present.
