ST. KILDA COUNCIL

Last night's meeting of the St. Kilda Borough Council was attended bv the Mayor (Mr A. D. Edgar) and Crs Densem. Longworth, Seddon, Garbutt, Hall, Ritchie, Telfer, and Dove. Cr S'eddon was appointed to represent the council on the Dunedin Drainage Board in succession to Mr H. Smeaton. It was resolved, on the motion of the Mayor to send a letter of condolence and sympathy to the relatives of the late Mr T. Sf'Culling. The Finance Committee's Yeport gave tho following as the state of tiie accounts:—District fund account, £6,035 6s (dr.); special loan account No. 3, £697 7s (cr.); drainage and sewerage account, £3OO lis sd( cr.). Tiie council decided to give hearty support to the following resolution*, proposed by the Hawera Borough Council:—"That, with a view to affording some measure of relief to the parents of families during the present, abnormal times, and talcing into consideration the fact that- the New Zealand Manufacturers' Association are unable to cope with tiie demand for adult footwear, the Government, be requested to take the necessary steps for the removal of the duty on children's footwear." A circular from the Stratford Borough Council proposing that the Government be asked to take the necessary steps to make Saturday afternoon a universal half-holiday throughout the Dominion was received. The Cromwell. Borough Council forwarded the following resolution:— " That, owing to the high price of leather goods consequent on tho Government removing the embargo on the export of hides, this council urge on tho_ Government the necessity of reimposing the embargo without delay."— The council decided to support the resolution. The secretary of the Otago Football Association requested the loan of a number of forms on Juno 3 to seat the i spectators at Culling Park during the | match between representative teams j from Canterbury and Otago. He ] undertook that the forms would be retunmd in good order, or any damage done either made good or paid for.— Granted. THE DOMAIN BOARD. } Cr Dove reminded tlvi council of the I resolution passed by them proposing j that the Domain Board should be taken j over by the City Council. Ho had made up his mind, he said, that in face of that resolution, which he heartily endorsed, ho could do nothing else but resign. Much to his chagrin, however, he found that the Domain Board was constituted differently from any other public body that he knew of, and that his resignation, having been sent to the executive officer, the secretary, was informal and null and void. As the City Council, at their meeting on Wednesday had declined to accept tho responsibility of taking over the board, and _as he had been notified that a meeting of the board was to bo held on Friday, he thought the best thing ho could .do was to attend it. They recognised that £250 would not be sufficient for the purpose, and he had stated at the meeting that St. Kiida did not want to shirk its responsibility. He moved thnt the council donate £SO towards the cost of tho temporary protective works. Or Longworth seconded the motion. Cr Hall thought the matter should be held over until after the public meeting, which is to consider the best means of raising funds for the purpose. He thought that those who had large property interests in the borough should contribute more 'than others who were scarcely able to pay their ordinary rates, Crs Densem and Seddon sooke in favor of making an immediate grant, and Cr Rail withdrew his amendment, remarking that he had not proposed it •in any spirit of opposition to the donation. The council unanimously decided to grant £6O to the Domain Board for 1 immediate use, ™
