HUMAN EVOLUTION.

TO THE KDITOR. Sir,—l think your esteemed Saturday contributor will take it in good part if I suggest that on this occasion he is a wee bit more ingenious than ingenuous. Under cover of applying a little soft soap to the University and Professor Benhain he slips in an insidious antidote to the professor's lectures. He might frankly admit with his pen, as it is sure he does with his _ heart, that the Bible story of the creation of man belongs to the" interesting region of mythology. Halfheartedly he does admit it, but throws in the insinuation: "It is of comparatively little consequenco whence we ccmo or how. The great thing is what we are and whither bound," That is-'so, but it is only retreating from the mysterv exploded to the mystery extant. The real point at present is that the Bible story is discredited. 2vot only that, but the foundation is knocked from under the whole j edifice _ of dogmatic Christianity. If man's creation and fall is fable, then its counterpart,- the Bedemption story, is also fable, with all that this entails and implies. The raisou d'etre of Christ disappears. Ho is not risen. " And if Christ bo not risen, then is our preaching vain and your faith is also vain." The whole system fails to the ground; indeed, it has honorably and well served its day. Reconstruction -is now called for in the light of our greater knowledge, freed from the vulgarities that encumber it in common with, other old systems. We are all seekers after God, and there is endless scope for the true Church to lead the way to yet higher ground in aspiration and altruism—a more' honorable field than worrying among ancient worn-out creeds and myths. Man is in Cod's hands, and can rest in confidence there.—l am, etc., T. T. M. Dunedin, May 30, 1920.
