PLUNKET SOCIETY

The committee of the Royal Society for the Health of Women and Children met yesterday, there being present Mrs Johnstone (in the chair), Lady Allen, Mesdamea Truby King, Moore, Joseph M'George, J. M. Ritchie, -Gallaway, Aiken, Rattray, J. C. M’George, T. K. Sidey ; the Misses Gow, F. and H. Reid, ana the secretarv.

The matron of .the. Karitnne-Harris Hospital reported for the month of March; —Number admitted, 11 j number discharged, 8 : • greatest number in residence at one time (babies), 14j number in. residence on March 31 (babies), 14; number of visitors to hospital, 140. Of the patients admitted during the mouth one mother and baby came from Mataura, one from Clinton, one from Palmerston South, one from Milton, and file remaining six from the district of Dunedin. All babies discharged were doing well with one exception. This was a cerebral case. The report regretted to have to record the death of one haby during the month, the cause of death being prematurity and pylcric stenosis, and further stated that the number of PJunket nurses in training was 7, and the number of Katitanc nurses in training 12. Seven nurses presented themselves for examination, and all passed, they being Phinket Nurses Kirkland. Cattle, and McDonald, and Karitano Nurses Martin. Moors, Morris, and Gibson, and the examiners being Dra Truby King and Williams. Phinket Nurse Bogbie would in a month’s time take over the matronsliip of tne Wanganui Karilane Hospital Nurse Kirkland had, been relieving Nurse Thomson in th« district. Karitane Nurses Martin, Moore, and Morris completed, and Karitani Nurses Ballantyno and Thompson commenced, a 12 months’ course ot training. Gifts were received during the moith from Mesdames Johnstone, Moore, Theomin, Ritchie, and Miss Bell.

The Plunket nurses for north aad central districts reported for month, ended March ol; —Number of babies on the list, 558: number of new cases for the month (babies only), 27. The Plunket nurse for South Dunedin district reported:—Number of babies on the list, 350 ; number of new cases for the month (babies only), 2L . ’ The executive were fortunate in being able to scours the cervices of Mrs Tyths Brown, who is acting as matron of the Karifp.nc-Harris Hospital during Miss Mor-land’s absence on her annual holiday. Mrs Brown was for several years matron of the hospital prior to being called far active service.

The Misses Reid kindly consented to organise the society’s stand at the Winter Show.

A vote of sympathy w as passed with Mrs A. Johnston Brown in tne death of her husband, who had rendered valuable services to the society as honorary auditor. The secretary was instructed to write to Mrs .Tohneton Brown on behalf of the committee.
