TJ 10 New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club have -diKiidsd to increase tho total stakes for the coming season by £II,OOO, making a total of £54,000 for distribution next season. THE JOCKEYS’ DISPUTE. A meeting of the New Zealand Jockeys’ Association was held at Wellington. The association’s dispute with the Avondale Club was considered and certain decisions ivore reached. The secretary of the association (Mr C. C. Sheath) stated subquently that the jockevs regarded the dispute with the Avondale Club as entirely vi- ii- dls I yute - “H will not affect the Wellington Racing Club as far as wo are concerned in any shape or form,” said Mr Sheath. “ All the members of the association will fulfil their engagements at Trcntham tomorrow and on Saturday.” ■Ly Sheath added that the officers of the Wellington Club had always treated the representatives of the association with every courtesy. There is no doubt that the racing public have an idea that jockeys earn princely salaries,” continued tne secretary. “ The association went to the trouble of compiling a list of the earnings of the jockeys for last season. The average of all tho boys riding was £B9 14s 7d for the season, and from that sum the dubs deduct 21, per cent. The boys have also to pay their travelling and living expenses while attending meetings.” Replying to an inquiry about the jockeys’ dispute and the possibility of his meeting a deputation from the Jockeys' Association, the Minister of rtabor {Hon. Mas■:e. y ) that since he had appointed a Conciliation Commissioner to deal with the dispute he could not well interfere in it, as presumably tho matters on which iho jockeys would wish to address him would be subjudice, pending investigation by Mr Hally. . ■ A meeting of the Labor Representation Committee held at Wellington, passed a resolution strongly supporting the stand taken by the Jockeys’ Association in Auckland. At a, meeting of the New Zealand Cricket Council held at Christchurch last night, it was decided to write to the Australian Boaid of Control asking if there was a possibility of the Marylebone Club’s tour in Australia being finished in time to permit of a visit being made to New Zealand not later than starch next. AMATEUR ATHLETICS. At the A.M.C.A. on Tuesday evening trophies and certificates won at the recent championship meeting were presented. Ihe monthly meeting of the centre was then held. It was mentioned bv the chairman (Mr Rosevear) that a 'letter hud been received requesting the centre to assist financially, if possible, in sending a team fronp New Zealand to compete in the Olympic games, and a recommendation was made that a meeting representative of all branches of sport should be held to consider the question.—lt was decided not to hold the Port to Dunedin Road Race, as several distance races were aj-eady on the programme for the season. It was resolved that the case of L A M’Allen be held over again until the next meeting.
