BOXING
WELLS-M’GOORTY MATCH. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, April 9. In the early' rounds of the Bombardier Wells-M'Goorty light Wells did most of the scoring. He coxed confidently, and seemed to have M’Goovty at his mercy' in the eighth round, hitting him around tire ring and severely punishing him. M'Goorty gave a wondertul display, however, in the ninth, when the crowd had expected Wells to finish the fight. The American showed extraordinary cleverness in defence. Wells did not attempt to gain a knock-out, but was content to box in great style. This enabled M'Goorty to recover, and he nearly knocked out Wells in the twelfth round with a hook to the point of the chm. Wells uppercut at almost the same instant, and both were shaken. Both fought hard for a knock-out in the remainder of the round. They were greatly distressed, and appeared likely to drop from exhaustion. ‘ This was a thrilling round, but Wells was superior thereafter. He downed M'Goorty’ in the fourteenth, and the latter gradually weakened, only his supreme cleverness and gameness enabling him to reach the sixteenth round.
