CITY POLICE COURT. (Before J. R... Bartholomew, Esq., S.M.) Charge- of Receiving.—Frederick William | Hyder and Albert Lees Wigg were charged' with receiving fu-om Patrick Clare. 40 watches, of the total value of £2O, know-; ing the same to have been stolen.—They j were further remanded until Thursday next, on the same bail as previously. A Dangerous Practice.—William Lawrence Smith was charged with at Waimat-e posting a postal packet containing a thing which was noxious—to wit, a box of .22 rifle cartridges.—The Rev. Mr Axelsen said that the defendant had written to him from Ohristchurch stating that he sent tho package, but that ho did not know he was doing wrong,—The Chief Detective said that the defendant posted the cartridges to his brother here.—His Worship said it was obvious that the defendant acted thoughtlessly. It was a dangerous thing to do. No doubt the prosecution would call attention to tile provisions of the Act. The defendantwould be fined 10s and costs (7s). Breaking Prohibition.—Jonas Hardy was charged tliat on February 18, being prohibited, he procured liquor.—He pleaded guilty, and was fined 20s. with 7s costs, in default seven days' imprisonment. Horse at Large.—Angus M'Donald was fined 10s, with 7s costs, for permitting a horse to be at large on.the tramline above tho High School. Assault.—James Alfred Borcham was charged with assaulting Leslie Thomson M'Natty at Dunedin on .December 27 last. —Mr Hay, instructed by Mr Lang, appeared for accused and asked for a re-mand.—Senior-sergeant Murray said that accused cleared out, and was arrested at Auckland. He had no objection "to the remand, providing the witnesses' expenses were .guaranteed.—His Worship decided, in opposition to the representations of Mr Hay, that the guarantee would have to be given as a condition of the remand.—The case thereupon stood over for a couple of hours. On being called again, Mr Hay said that defendant would plead .guilty.— His Worship inflicted a line of £5, with £2 19s 10c! -expenses, in deafult one month's imprisonment. Maintenance. —James Lamb consented to in order for the payment of 37s 6d per week fc-r the maintenance of his two children.
