ROAD IMPROVEMENT

The local bodies’ conference (Wellington Province) resolved to urge the (lov-sto-ment the necessity of improving the road access to the capital city, especially referring to tho dangerous nature of the Paeltakanki Hill and the Rimutaka. Hill; also to ask for the appointment of a Commission to inquire into the best way of accompli siring the same with a view to remedying the matter forthwith, and treating it as pan of the roauvarterial road. , It was resolved that the Government !•« asked to legislate during next session of Parliament for tho creation of an arterial roads board for tho yTorth Island ; that'ouch board- be financed by the issue of State legal tender notes, upon which no' interest slrali. be charged, but which notes shall bo redeemed on the completion of this public work at tlie rate of 6 per cent per annum ; that tho upkeep of these approved arterial roads shall be borne by the local bodies in which each length of 'the road rests, and after the expiry of one- ycar from date of laying by tho Arterial Roads Board.
