COUNCIL OF EDUCATION

At the sitting of the Council of Education at Wellington yesterday the following resolutions were adopted : That tho council reaffirm the resolution .passed laat year that no child should bo taught in any room with less than 12 square feet of floor spaco, and that Parliament be asked to grant £500,000 to provide the necessary accommodation in primary schools. That where available the minimum amount of land for a school should he four acres. That in cases where there are more than 400 children attending a school there should bo at least on© aero of flat land for each 100 children attending the school, and the Government bo asked for an interim grant of £500,000 towards -carrying this out. That in any new large school proposed to bo erected provision should be made for a suitable room for tho use of the. school dentist and doctor. That in view of present conditions a further increased capitation allowance should bo granted to school committees for incidental purposes. That where tho provision of school sites and playgrounds, whether now o? additional, is necessary tho full cost should bo found by the department unless there is money available for tho purpose out of the general funds of the bcHUxl. That owing to the national importance of securing a sound course of instruction in history in primary and secondary schools steps be taken to make better provision for it than at .present exists. That in view of the national ijstportanee of manual and technical instruction ' the cost of sites for building.? for such purposes should be provided by tho State in all cases in which local provision for sites by means of donation or othorAvi.se is insufficient to meet all reasonable needs.
