ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS
An inquest was held at Palmerston on Saturday in regard to the death of William Johnston M‘Ara Rosa, who was found dead in bed at the residence of his father, Mr James Ross, at Mount Hampton, Bushey road, Palmerston, on Friday last. In the course of his evidence Mr Boss, sen., said his son was strong and healthy until he went to the Boer War, after which he was never the same. There he received an injury to his knee, and also had enteric fever. He was thrown from a horse about 12 years ago, and on that occasion was unconscious for nine days After that he was always weak. He had also a growth behind the ear, for which he'underwent an operation. Deceased was a reserved man, and one who would suffer in silence. On the day before his death he was trucking sheep, and complained of feelin o, weak. Witness had not been aware* that deceased possessed a revolver. Dr Thomas said that in his opinion the cause of death was a bullet wound, selfinflicted at a time when the deceased was in a very morbid slate of mind, was suffering from acute mental depression, and was not responsible for his actions. The iurv returned a verdict that the cause of dea'th was a bullet wound, self-inflicted by the deceased while suffering from temporary insanity. ... . 'Geoige Brand committed suicide at Stirling yesterday by cutting his throat with a razor. He was 43 years of age, and leaves a widow and three childiem He w T as the proprietor of a small dairying business. At the inquest to-day it was stated that the deceased had been worrying over financial matters, and had suffered from sleeplessness lately. The verdict was that death was due to a wound self-inflicted while the deceased was in a state of unsound mind. A P.A. message from Christchurch states that Marie Evans. aged nine years, was drowned at Taylor’s Mistake, near Lyttelton Heads. She was bathing with two other girls, and all were carried out by a strong backwash. A rescue party saved the others with difficulty. Mario Evans’s body was secured some timo later.
