Holland does not intend to stand for ) v-,-..:ction as Mavor of Christchurch, The Hon. J. T. Paul left Dunedin thus morning for Auckland. The death is announced by cable of Mr F. W. Day, the well-known Newmarket trainer. Cr R. S. Black is definitely announced as a candidate for the City Mayoralty. Cable advice has been received in Dunedin of the death in London, on the 6th inst., of Mr William Murray, of Messrs Murray, Roberts and Co., Ltd, New Zealand, and Sanderson, Murray and Co., London. Balclutha ‘ Free Press ’ understands that Mr A. F. Duthie, the popular local auctioneer for the Otago Farmers’ Co-opera-tive Association, has been promoted to Dunedin, to fill the position of senior auctioneer for the company, rendered vacant by the death of Mr Lachlan M’Loan, and will bo leaving Balclutha shortly. At the Chief Post Office yesterday Mr A. J. I>. Scott, who has retired after 41 years’ service as a letter-carrier and. sorter, was presented with a Morris chair and a rose bowl for Mrs Scott. Mr A. E. M‘Gregor, acting chief postmaster, in making tha presentation, referred to Mr Scott’s good and conscientious work as chief sorter. Mr Scott, in reply, said that great changes had taken place in tho service. When ho joined there were eight lottor-carriers; now there wore 50. Conditions wore much bettor now than in those days. Ho thanked his brother officers for their handsome presents.
