CITY POLICE COURT,

(Before H. Y. Widdowson, Esq., S.M.) Drunkenness. —Two first wore each fined 10s, in default 24 hours' imprisonment. Another was mulcted in tho sum of 20s, or 43 hours. Maintenance. —Henry Frederick Elliott, charged with disoeboying an order for the maintenance of his wife, was remanded until Monday. Assaulting a Detective.—Charles Goodman was charged with drunkenness, with using obscene language, with assaulting Detective Hammerlv, and with committing mischief by damaging a gold watch chain to the value of 7s, the property of the detective. He pleaded not guilty.—Detective Hammerlv said that at 7.45 yesterday evening ho went to a laundry in Maclaggan street. Accused was standing on tho footpath with a man and a ( woman. When witness came out of tho eSibp accused used a disgusting expression to him, and followed him through the Arcade. He told him twico to go away after ho had addressed obscene language to him. Witness wont to tho Police Station, and wa.s returning to Princes street when ho met accused at the Leviathan Hotel corner. The latter again used disgusting language to him and struck him in the face. Witness retaliated, and accused fell. Witness picked him up, and was talcing Mm to the Police Station when he resisted violently. He grabbed witness's watchchain, uind after breaking it threw it to the ground. Witness then upsot him, and with tho assistance 01 a civilian locked him up.—Accused said he met the detective on his way to the Police Station to report him for having used an expression to him.—Hi.s Worship said that accused had simply made a statement, while the Court had tho j sworn evidence of the detective.—Accused admitted that he had been three times convicted of using obscena language.—His Worship said it was quite evident that accused had followed the detective and used disgusting language to him. On the charge of drunkenness ho would be fined 10s, or 24 hours' imprisonment, itnd on the charge of using obscene language he would be fined £5, or a month s imprisonment. The charge of assai.d ting a detective he looked upon as a serious matter, and he had the sworn evidence of Detective Hannnerly that accused struck him in the face. On that charge accused would be sentenced to one month's imprisonment. On the last charge he would be ordered to pay the amount of tho damage, or seven days' imprisonment, tho sentences to be cumulative. Rehearing Refused.—An application was made for a rehearing in a case in which a first offender for drunkenness (recently before tho Court) was committed to the Roto Roa Inberiates' Home. Mr D. D. Macdonald appeared in support, and Mr J. M. Gaflaway with the police to oppose. The application was refused.—Mr Macdonald then asked His Worship to fix security for an appeal to the Supreme Court-—His Worship: You can file it.
