The fortnightly meeting last night was presided over by the Mayor (Mr J. Tait). CORRESPONDENCE. From the .Under-Secretary of Internal 1 Affairs, enclosing ' Gazette '■ extract showing tho members of the recently constituted Port Chalmers Fire Board to be: George Leyon Asher (appointed by Government), Henry Montague Didsbury, Somerled Bartlet Macdonald, Maurice Henry ; Priest (elected bv fire insurance companies), i I. C. Isbister, W. Lunn, and W. G. Colej man (by borough council).—Received. I From'the Inspector of Rabbits, requiring the corporation to destroy rabbits on nine sections in the North-east Harbor and Blueskin district.—This was being attended to. From Mr J. M. HarJand, asking that the ' trees and shrubs in Daly street be pruned, as these were obstructing the light from the street lamps.—Reserves Committee to ■ act. i From the General Laborers' Union, stati ing that it was expedient that the union's claim for increase of wages, etc., be brought before the Conciliation Council. — Received. REPORTS. The Works Committee reported on- the work done. Asphalt patching, tarring, and ' sanding had been done in Burns street ! (both sides) ind in Wickliffe terrace; ! broom cut buck from the paths in Island : terrace and Victory place; channels ' cleaned and culverts repaired in Carey Bay. In connection with the two culverts m : Carey Bay beyond the Harbor Board slip, I something of a permanent nature was required to bo done as soon as possible, as ; these culverts wore becoming a source of ; danger. The committee would report on same and cost of reapirs at next meeting. | If weather conditions were at all favcri able, it was intended doing some a-sphalt ! patching in several parts of the town, also j some tarring and sanding where necessary, : and then the regrading and reasphalting of the lower side of Harrington street would be gone on with.—Adopted. ' The Finance Committee reported that the receipts amounted to £65 9s sd. and expenditure (including subsidy of £l2 10f to Mechanics' Institute) to £215 6s 7d. In respect to the gasworks, the receipts to'tailed £25 18s od, and the expediting to ! £lO6 0s Id. The planting of trees and | necessary nursery work at the reservoir j was being pushed on as fast as possible. ' For the three months ended August 31 the ! quantity of gas sold amounted to 839,900 f cubic feet, for a revenue of £334 3s 3d l (including meter rental, and to date £23' ! 5s 3d has beeir paid, living a balance <>!' £55, which will be mostly all paid bv th end of the month. A more detailed state ment would bo made out as at Septembei 30, showing how the gas business stands About 170 ft of the relaying of Mount street main was completed. The old one proved to be in a. very bad state, as the council would be able to see from the samples. On opening the ground there was another |in main running up alongside the old 2in one; thi? pipe was compl:tely gone. The service into Chick's Hotel had to be renewed, and there wore also live connections into all the sections where the old buildings had been standing. The con dition of all these pipes will prove the advisability of renewing all the active services into' all the old buildings in Port, and cutting those off at the main which are not in use.- -Adopted. GENERAL. Cr Lunn browrht up the matter of improving the Mechanics' Institute, and with that end in" view a sub-committee, consist- j ini; of the Mayor, with Crs M'Lachlau. !
