LAWN TENNIS. Miss Molla Biurstedt, national tennis champion, and Mrs Georgo Wightman, who held the title before the_ Norse girl mado her appearance in American tennis, won the Doubles finals in the invitation tournament of the Field Club of Greenwich (America)- last month. They triumphed with unexpected) ease over Mis-s Eleanor Gcss and Miss Marion Zindcrstedn, the present national Doubles champions, in the concluding match of the women's doubles division, superior steadiness being the leading point in their favor.

Kilmaine (N.Z.) has been scratched for the Caulfield Cup. At South Australia Tattersall's Meeting this month, a peculiar accident happened in tho machine during the afternoon, and -what would have been tho upshot if two or three of the thoughtful onlookers had not acquainted the ofh'ciaJs with tho state of affairs must be left to conjecture. Instantly the totalisator officials and the committee of the club met in conclave, and it was decided to take th© bull by the horns and announce that ro £5 tickets would be recognis'ed as Buch, and the pay-out clerks were told accordingly. Ar a matter of fact there were 23 of these £5 tickets sold a-s £1 vouchers on the winner, Antas. Everyone who presented his ticket was challenged and asked tho amount he paid for it, arid 30 of, the 23 received at the rate of £l. However, one of the tellers was somewhat careless, forgot to put the question, and quits as a matter of form paid three £5 tickets in full. He, of course, will Buffer, and not the club. i
