OBITUARY

MRS W. H. CUTTEN. Mrs W. H. Cutten died at her residence, Belmont, Anderson Bay, yesterday, aged 91 years. Tho eldest daughter of the late Captain Cargill, " the founder of Otago," she was born at Edinburgh, and spent her youth in York and Norwich. In March, lß'lß. when sho w,as just 21 years old, she landed here with her father from the ship John Wyckliff, so that her connection with the early activities of the province was very real. In 1850 she married the late, Mr W. H. Cutten, who w*as long well known in Dunedin as the Chief Commissioner of Crown Lands, and was nlso member for Taieri in the House of Representatives (1878-79); and she was a vital and dominating figure in the social life of the province for many years. Mrs Cutten has been frail lor years, the frailty of ags, however, and not of definite sickness, and she. was not dangerously ill for more than a week. She was one. of a family of 17 children, and only two f-nrvive her--Mrs J. It. Johnston lof Dunedin) and Lieuten-ant-colonel Cargill, who is resident in Hengal, India.
