GRAIN AND PRODUCE

Donald Eeid and Co.. Ltd., report for the week ended to-day : Oats.-—The market is now firmer than at any time during the season. Prime heavy" Cartons are keenly competed for, and "the same may bo said of lines suitable for milling; while for lower grades there is also strong inquiry. All consignments to hand during the week have bean placed at satisfactory grices. We quote :—Prime milling, 5s to os 3d; good to best feed, 4s 9d to 4s lid; medium, 4s 6d to 4s 8d; inferior, 4s 3d to 4s 5(1 per hnsliel (sacks extra). Wheat.—All kinds are scarce, and meet with ready sale on arrival. Potatoes. —The market is now poorly supplied, and for good to best table lines a decided advance in prices has been made during the past week. Prime lots have most attention, but all sorts in sound condition are saleable on hetter terms. The arrival of a shipment of Australian potatoes at the port during this week will probably have the effect of steadying valuea. We quote : —Best table potatoes, £ll 10s to £l2; medium to good, £lO to £11; others, £9 to £lO per ton (sacks included). " Chaff.—There is good inquiry for heavy lines suitable for shipment, as "well as a steady local demand. Prime quality is in most demand, and all consignments of this ■class are sure of ready sale at satisfactory prices. Lower grades, although not so keenly sought after, are also more -aaleable. We quote : —Best oaten sheaf. £7 5s to £7 10s; choice, to £7 12s M ; medium to good, £6 10s to £7; light and discolored, £5 to £6: straw chaff; £4 to £4 5s per ton (bags extra). Messrs Balgety and Co., Ltd.. report as hflows:— Oats.—Offerings of late have bceit very light, and the quantity remaining in store on growers' account is small. There is a strong demand for all grades, and the market remains firm. Good heavy samples, suitable for milling" purposes, are readily placed on arrival at quotations. Seed line's are also moving off more freely. We quote: Prime milling, 5s 2d- to 5s 3d: good to best feed, 4s lid to 5s Id; medium to good, 4s 9d to 4s lid ; light and inferior, from 4s- 3d per bushel (sacks extra). Wheat. —Very little offering. All samples in milling condition are readily taken by millers at maximum Government rates. Fowl wheat is in very short supply, and readily quitted on arrival at full rates. Potatoes-. —The market has been dependent on supplies from Canterbury and ■northern districts of late. The quantity coming forward being unequal to the demand'has resulted in a further firming of values. More particularly is this noticeable in choice, ireshly-picked consisfiimen-ts, which, meet with moat favor from buyers. Medium qualitv lines have been selling more freely, due to the fact that supplies fcave been" light. Seed lines, well graded *nd free from disease, are inquired for. We quote: Best tables, £ll 10s to £l2; medium to good, £lO to £11: others, from £9 per ton (sacks in)." Chaff.—Moderate supplies have _ been coming forward, and all good quality is quitted on arrival. There -is a good local demand in addition to shippers' requirements for _suitable quality. Medium • quality and lighter lines have been moving off more freely. We quote: Choice black oat, to £7 12s 6d ; good oaten sheaf, £7 os to £7 103; medium to good, £6 10s to £7; light and inferior, from £5 per ton (sacks extra).
