AMD STRATEGIC PURPOSE. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. PARIS, August 25. (Received August 26, at 1.10 p.m.) The Australians on Friday took prisoner 800 men, including 32 officers. The British Guardsmen took prisoner the same number during a hand-to-hand struggle, in which they had all their own way. The expenditure of ammunition is unimaginable. There is little, if any, artillery preparation, but, once the infantry go on to the attack, the German rear and communications are plentifully watered with shells. The allied attacks, extending from the Champagne to the soa, are intended to create a strategic situation equal to all eventualities. The French artillery, from Boye to Courcy, Is thundering away incessantly. Innumerable local actions have been fought on tho Lorraine front, and numerous prisoners have been brought in. .
