THE WEATHER

EAST TAIERT LOW PARTS MAY BE FLOODED,

REST OP TAIERI APPARENTLY SAPE,

'The Taieri folic were apprehensive yesterdav of danger from the flooding of tho Taieri, and they are indebted to Mr W. D. Mason, of Middlemarch, for keeping Mr B. B. Oouston (county engineer) frequently informed regarding the weather conditions at Strath Taieri. Stock was removed from the area liable to be flooded at East Taieri. Although the river did not overflow yesterday, it was running through the gap at Anderson's at 9.30 this morning. The river at Middlemarch was steady to-day at 21in above normal, and reports this morning were that the weather conditions were more settled. At Waipori Falls tho "Waipori was 3ft over the weir, and was maintaining that height to-day. Tho Silverstream was not very high. Commenting on these reports, Mr Couston said at 2 o'clock this afternoon that, provided there is not more rain- the probabilities are that the low area of Bast Taieri will be inundated by the hack waters, as tho river comes down from up country, but that Bouth Taieri will not be affected by the rise in the. river. MOSGIEL. This morning wo had a message from Mosgiel that tie Taieri River was up a very little, but later advices (2 p.m.) were to the effect that the river was falling, and that all the small streams were back to normal.

There was a lot of wafer lying on the low parts of the plain, but no damage of any consequence was feared, as the settlers had taken the. precaution to remove their stock to higher levels. Yesterday the rainfall at Mosgiel was 99 points, and this morning up to noon there was another 25 point?. A small flood was experienced at Berwick yesterday. RAIN IN" CENTRAL OTAGO.

Advice from Alexandra state* thatsteady and heavy rain has been falling since early on Saturday morning, with every indication of continuing. The snow on the high country is sure to bo affected, but the river being very low, the rain will need to continue for" some considerable time before flooding need bo feared.
