ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS

On Saturday evening (says the ' Southland Times') an accident occurrod fit Kites road, a motor car driven by Mr A. Melvin colliding with the Clinton train. When nearing the crossing Mr Melvin saw the train, and, realising that ho would be unable to cross before the engine, steered the car in a direction almost parallel with the railway lines. He was too late, however, and the. car struck the engine and was carried along for a number of yards. The passengers (Mr Stanley Hodgson, Mrs Hodgson, and two children) retained their seats throughout. The firstnamed was rendered unconscious, and also met with on injury to a leg. The car was damaged to the extent of about £2OO. The ' Bruce Herald ' slates that a na-dy accident occurred on Saturday to a party of motorists returning from Dumdin to Balelntha when in the vicinity of Helensbrook. It appears that the driver, intent upon avoiding the many potholes that make the Main road, a danger to travellers, eventually landed in a gaping pit, with the result that the cax swerved from the road and collided with a concrete telegraph pole, tearing the aide out of the ear. The party, consisting of Mr and Mrs Peterson and child (of Orepnki), his sister and sister-in-law (of Bakdutha), were all more or less seriously injured. Sirs Peterson, whoso face came in contact with the telegraph pole, received .serious facial injuries, and was'picked up from the ground, in a more or less unconscious state. Tho other ladies and child were precipitated violently on to tho ground, receiving injuries to arms and le;;' 1 - and a severe shaking. While Mr Roderick M'Kemde and his daughter Joh.irm were driving along the Anderson Bay road yesterday afternoon the horse shied. Both were thrown out. aim sustained several nasty cuts and bruises. They were admitted to the Hospital. Tho father was reported to-day to show no improvement, while the daughter is doing well.
