Runt, the well-known Christ-, church solicitor, who has been appointed a- sti]x>ii<liary magistrate, is a barrister and solictor of the Supreme Court of New Zealand. He was born in I/jndon, lust came out to Xp-w Zealand at an early age with his lather, the. Into Dr F. K. limit, who practised in Cbiistchureh. He was educated at- Christ's College, and was afterwards articled to Mr J. C. Martin. He was admitted as a solicitor in 1891, and subsequently as a, barrister. Bishop, S.M., senior magistrate of Christehurc'h, who will retire from the bench on August 1, has been given three months' leave of absence on full pay from that date. This action has been taken on account of n decision of the Minister of Justice that all magistrates over 65 years of age shall retire on. superannuation. He was appointed in 1882, and lias served for 56 y-ears on the bench without o holiday, and without even the usual court holidays. Tie has been about- 46 years in the State service, and has filled many positions., which have given him a- unique career. Mr Hi shop's retirement from the bench will not affect hi-, work on the .Second Oanterlmrv Military Service Board. of which he is chairman. This work, on account of the large number of appeals, is ocenpvlng a great deal of his time . Mr Bishop was born at Tiehborne. Hants. Kugland. on March 12. 1851. and is the son'of the late Rev. A. 0. Bishop. M.A.. rector of Brandean, Rants. Mr Bishop was educated piivately. and arrived at Lvtlelton in January. 1869. He entered the Native, Department in 1873. and soon afterwards became interpreter to Ju<it_'p, Manning (author of ' Old Xew Zealand"). He was attached to the Native Land Court of the Northern District, in 1876. and in the same year became clerk and inter- ■ prefer to the Resident .Magistrate's Court at Hokiana-a, lb- became Resident Magistrate at Mangcnui in 1882. -and in 1890 was appointed to the- North Auckland District. He became Magistrate in North I r-ant-ei-bui'v .in 1893. and became Slipendihit >rngirti~lc in OiT-i.«tc!i;ir<-h '« 1905. It is stated that Mr S. E.
