THE LATE DR BEDFORD
PROFESSORIAL BOARD'S TRIBUTE. At a meeting of the Professorial Board of the University of Otago, held yesterday, Dr Inglis (chairman), the following resolution, proposed by Dr Gilray, and seconded by Dr Benham, was unanimously adopted by the members standing: The members of the Professorial Board have heard with profound sorrow of the. tragic death of their colleague, Dr Bedford, Professor of Economics and History, and Dean of the Faculty of Law and Commerce, and deeply sympathise with Mrs Bedford and her family in their irreparable loss. The board mourns in Dr Bedford a genial colleague with manv attractive gifts; and the students have losf bv his death an inspiring teacher with Jofty ideals, and a friend who took a great interest in the prosperity of their clubs and societies. It is' inte'resting to recall that Dr Bedford first made Ha mark as a speaker in our University Debating Society, at which, not onlv 'while student, but often since, he delivered vigorous addresses, as he also frequently did at the Students' Christian Union. ' Dr Bedford was a man of remarkable versatility. - He was an eloquent platform speaker, an earnest and forcible preacher, a man of wide readino- j n various departments, a stimuFating teacher and an accomplished musician. Although short, his life was singularly rich nnd full. His chief characteristic was his sympathetic humanity. He was the champion of the poor and the friendless, and a warm friend of workers in every class of society. It is pleasant to remember now that, although Dr Bedford's views and opinions on various public questions did not always carry conviction to all his hearers, his sinceritywas never doubted. We mourn in Dr Bedford a man of large and varied gifts, and of great possibilities of future service to the Dominion of New Zealand.
