UNIVERSITY COUNCIL

- Mr John Roberts, C.M.G. (Vice-Chan-cellor), presided at yesterday's meeting of the Council of the University of Otago. APPOINTMENTS. Messrs John Ross and T. K. Sidey, M.P., were reappointed the council's representatives 011 the Otago High Schools Board of Governors. Dr D. Maokay was appointed assistant to Dr Malcolm * for 1918, at a salary of £2OO per annum. The nodical committee- announced the appointment of Mr 0. M. Paulin as junior dental surgeon at a salary of £20.0 per annum. t A sub-committee was appointed to meet at once and make temporary arrangements for the eaiTving on of the work of the late Dr Bedford. GENERAL. The secretary of the Otago Hospital Board wrote stating that the following arrangements had teen'made-for the accommodation of bursars in the nurses' old home m 1918 : (1) Charges for maintenance to be at the rate of 27s 6d per week while in residence, and 5s per week while not in residence; (2) the minimum charge per annum per student to be £SO and the maximum £7l 10s; (3) the council and the medical superintendent to arranc-e the duties and control of bursars by the board and superintendent.—Agreed to"; the Dean to make the necessary arrangements as indicated in paragraph 3. The Director of Education wrote statin f that the Government were not prepared to pay more than £3.000 towards the erection of a home science school. Re suggested that an additional £2.000 might be provided by subsidisaole contributions.— Referred to the Finance and Home Science Committees for report. The Chancellor and Registrar reported having forwarded to the Education Department applications for bursaries from the following:—Doris Mary Osmers Mav Doreen Bishop, Dorothy Cashbourne Hayes, Constance Ruth Calverlev. and Christina Hope Bremner. Action approved.—The Chancellor, and Registrar also submitted applications for bur-aries-from Janet Braid M'Leod, Enid Lester Burwell, Enid Melita Canty, Zeta Tui Miles, and Tna Katherine Preston. Resolved to forward applications to the Education Department, with the exception of the last-named, the Vice-Chancellor beiii" authorised to forward them, with the necessary documents.
