HONORING THE N.Z. CHAMPION. At the Caledonian Club pavilion last night members gathered to do honor to their clubmate, Mr W. Foster, who won the singles championship at the recent Dominion Association's tournament. The president of the club (Mr A. F. Browne) occupied the chair, and briefly explained the object of the gathering. The fame of Mr Foster's exploit had spread beyond the Dominion's shores, for a mesage of congratulation had been received from Mr C. E. Keast (now of Sydney), but an old member of the club, who still took an interest in their doings. Mr Foster's performance had been of exceptional merit, and bis position as champion of New Zealand was something to be proud of. Later on in the evening Mr Browne, in happy terms, presented Mr Foster with an oak and silver salver subscribed for by members of the club. The president said it was no small achievement that Mr Foster had accomplished in winning the championship, as he was pitted, against the cream of tho Dominion's bowlers. To be sure, it was not surprising that Dunedin had won all the championships, for this City was the homo of New Zealand bowling, and had the advantage of having tho best greens to play upon. It had been admitted by visitors that ''Caledonian Green was the best in Dunedin, which was a great compliment to their greenkeeper (Mr J. Ogg). But, good as the green was, Mr Foster, on the form he had displayed, would have troubled the . best of them wherever the games had been decided. The salver was handed to Mr Foster to the accompaniment of cheers. Mr Foster replied with some feeling. He admitted that he had had strenuous games, and was pushed to the limit in several contests. This was especially the case in the game where Professor Maxwell Walker defeated him. He had adopted the policy of the drawing game, which he had found to pay him on previous occasions. This was the fourth time he had competed in the Dominion championships. He greatly appreciated the kindness of his clubmates in presenting their handsome gift. All through ho had been supported by their sympathy, which had been of great assistance to him. He was pleased to think that he had been able to bring a championship to the Caledonian Club, and hoped that he would be able to do. something further in the same direction later on. At intervals songs and recitations were contributed by Messrs Allpress, Clancy, Mearns. Davis, Howell, Smith. Steans, etc. Mr P. Bryson was the accompanist. The toast list was short, comprising "The Champion," "The Boys at the Front," and "The Game of Bowls." Kaikorai v. Taieri. played at Mosgicl on Saturday, resulted: K. T. J. M'Fadden (s) t. A. M'Lec.d (s) 36 25 N. Malcolm (s) v. J. Tait (s) ... 22 15 Allnutt (s) v. A. Davidson (s) 15 21 Totals 53 51
