A Press Association cable message from Sydney reports that Mr Bean (Australian war correspondent) cables a tribute to Mr 2s’oel Boss, who, ho savs, after joining the London ‘ Times ’ staff, rose with unexampled swiftness to the very forefront of his profession. Only the inner circles of London journalism knew how brilliant was his success. ‘ The Times ’ allowed him a freedom which might be envied by the oldest members of the staff. Within a year ho counted Mr Kipling, Lord Milner, and Mr Balfour among his friends, ihe Empire, by hisTleath, loses one of its most brilliant journalists. Mr 0. D. Flamank (Dunedin), after eight years’ service, is resigning from his position, on tho executive of the Now Zea. hud Educational Institute. At Friday afternoon’s meeting of that body at Wellington reference was made to the greatservices rendered by Mr Flamank, who has a record of 18 years’ consecutive attendance at the institute’s annual meetings. Cabinet has appointed Mr W. Newton, of tho Labor Department, to the office ‘of Conciliation Commissioner for Otago and Southland. Mr Newton has been associated with the department for 13 years and has been in charge of the Dunedin and Auckland districts. \ ice-admiral Sir Rosslyn Wcmyss, the new First Sea Lord, was commander of the Oplur on the occasion of the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York (tho present- King and Queen) to Australia and Few Zealand in 1901. York cable states that Madam I n* niaf J° a successful tour. Miss btella Power, the Melbournian singer with her, had an enthusiastic reception.
