CANADIAN WAR MEMORIALS

GREAT SERIES OF PAINTINGS. The Dominion of Canada, which was the first of all British Dominions to offer her blood and treasure to the Mother Land in the hour of need, is first again in devising a scheme which is to provide a magnificent artistic memorial of this great chapter in British history (writes a correspondent in tho London ' Sunday Observer'). Under the auspices of the Canadian War Records, a Canadian war memorials fund lias been formed, with Lord Robhermere as chairman and Lord Beaverbrook and Captain B. L. Lima on tho committee, with the object of providing tbe new Parliament Building at Ottawa with a series of decorative and commemorative 'paintings by the lea-ding artists, dealing with Canada's achievement in the war. _ Among the paintings so far commissioned are a,gigantic battle pictnre, 'The Second Battle of Ypres,' by Mr R. Jack, A.R.A.;_ two chaYacteristic landscapes in the fighting zone by Mr D. Y. Cameron, A.R.A.; a large war allegory by Mr C. Sims, R.A.; a 30ft decorative painting by Mr Augustus John; a series of lithographs depicting the horrors of war by Mr F. Brangwyn, A.R.A.; ' The First Landing of the French in Canada' and ' The First Landing of the Canadians in France.' by Mr E. Bundy, A.R.A.; scenes of life in the Canadian training camps, by Mrs Laura Knight, Miss Anna Airy, and Miss Clare Atwood; a large decorative painting by Mr G. Clausen, R.A.; ' The Ruins of Arras and of Ypres,' by Mr Kerr Lawson; 'Sir R. Borden Reviewing Canadian Troops in France,' by Mr Dudley Hardy; an aircraft subject, by Mr R. Nevinso'n; ' Transport of Canadians Across tho Atlantic,' by Mr N. Wilkinson; a portrait of Princess Patricia, by Mr 6. Shannon, A.R.A.; and 'General Turner and his Staff by Mr_W. Nicholson. Other paintings and -works of sculpture will be arranged for shortly, and the whole collection is to be exhibited in London prior to shipment to Canada. No appeal to the public or to private individuals has been made, tbe fund being created from tbe profits made by the exhibitions of Canadian war photographs and the publications issned by the Canadian War Records.
