The fortnightly meeting last night was attended by tho" Mayor (Mr J. Tail), Os Coleman. M'Lachlan, Jones, Fail, Lunn, Love, Lightbourhe, Williamson, and fsbister. His Worship referred to the recent death of Mrs Groldie, who was an old and respected resident, and a re-solution of sympathy with her reiatives was carried. The balance-sheet for the past year was adopted, and tho clerk instructed' to have tho usual copies printed. CORRESPONDENCE. From Mr 0. Perry, Mayor of Hokitika, proposing that a national day of prayer be held in respect to winning th-o war.— Agreed to. From the Otrtgo Expansion League, asking for two representatives of tho council to carry out the resolution of the 11th hist, in respect to land tenures in Otago.— The Mayor and Cr isbister appointed. From tho Minister of Finance, urging active support of the War Loan.—His Worship said this was a very important matter, and as Port Chalmers had not been behindhand in the past in war matters—either in men and money—he suggested that tho council give tho town a lead m the matter of subscribing to tho War Loan.— Suggestion agreed to ; also that £I,OOO be subscribed. From Mr Jl. Aspinall, enclosing form of transfer of a lease at Mihiwaka from William Coatsworth to Peter Haggart.—Transfer agreed to. From tho Highland Land League, London, stating that they understood an unexpended balance of £60,000 of New Zealand's contribution to the Belgian fund was in the hands of the Dominion's High Commissioner, and was not now required. The Highlanders' sacrifice had materially contributed to saving the remnant of Belgium, would tho council recommend that tho sa,id balance, or a substantial part of it, be handed to the league to relieve war I distress in the Highlands and Islands of I Scotland.—Resolved to make ropresenta- | tions to the lioverninent in the desired I direction. j REPORTS. | The Works Committee reported that the i streets had been attended to as usual louring tlio past fortnight; tho channels | in several streets cleaned out. two trucks I of metal spread on Ci-.;y street and MagI netic street; a new mud tenk put in at ! the lower end of Mary street; a, short storm-water drain laid a'ero-.s Wickliffe terrace for a new new mud tank to be put in at the lower end of Burns street; adies spread in Currio street ; asphalt patching clone jn Ouorge street and the Square; gorso cut and burned in Beach road ; the tracks off Beach road repaired, and some rotten rock made ready for the repairs to Meridian street. Tho matter of the application for an increase in the price of tho sanitary contract bad been arranged, tho contractor having agreed to withdraw his letter meantime.—Adopted. The Finance Committee reported that Mr Knewslubb had commenced repairing the bridge at the reservoir, and was making good progress. Tho water was lowered fully six. feet to enable the decayed portions of tho piles to be removed "and the new tops spliced on. The whole of the work was expected to bo completed in three weeks. Tho forester reported that ?>is_ work for the past fortnight had been lifting and planting out trees on the reservoir property, and planting some trees m Magnetic street. The remainder of the trees m that street and in Beach street would be planted next. The committee recommended that a telephone, be installed connecting tho reservoir and Town Clerk's residence (party line), at an annual cost of £ll. This would give telephone communication with the reservoir day and night. The receipts for the past fortnight totalled £ll9 3s lid, and expenditure £235 14s 3d. —Cr Lunn thought that, as a telephone was not particularly needed, its installation should stand over -until materials were cheaper, and he moved in that direction. —The amendment was lost, and the report adopted as submitted.
