SECOND MILLION IN SIGHT. The cash receipts reported to Wellington up to yesterday now reach a total of £600,000. There are also amounts which total £1.020,000 known to be coming in. Thus the present amount, including banks and brokers not yet reported, is £1,630,000. These include three more amounts of £250,000 each. The circular to friendly societies is already beginning to have a good effect. A secretary in Wellington wrote in saying that his executive were going to do all they could, and would invest £l,lOO immediately. The Carterton Oddfellows are investing £3OO. As an example of patriotism, it may be mentioned that the Hawke's Bay brokers, who deal with a largo number of moneyed people, have offered to do all War Loan work free of charge, and have announced that they will not claim brokerage from the Government. A gentleman in Wanganui has offered the Government a holding of 7 per cent. debentures in exchange for 4g per cent. war bonds. The committee of the Wanganui Jockey Club decided to invest £I,OOO, and the Wanganui Trotting Cluh to invest £2OO, both in War Loan bonds. CHRISTCHURCH CITY COUNCIL SUPPORT. LABOR AMENDMENT REJECTED. At the meeting of the Christ-church City Council last night an appeal was received from the Minister of Finance for help and support to the Liberty War Loan. It was resolved—"That this council heartily endorse the, sentiments in Sir Joseph Ward's letter, and undertake to do all in their power to promote the Liberty War Loan." The following amendment, proposed by the Labor group in tho council, was lost by 16 votes to 4 :—" That, while wishing the Government success in their efforts to raise money, this council regret that the Government saw fit to exempt the loan from income taxation, and this council further think that a larger sum of the money'necessary to finance the war should be taken from the £20.000,000 of war profits that have come into this country during the war period."
