'CARMEN'
-AT THE GRAND THEATRE. The "William Fox photo-play version of the well-known,opera 'Carmen' is quite a remarkable production. The petting of this great story of passion is remarkably attractive. Old-world scones in Seville are an exotic picture of life which by themselves would make a good film, even without the dramatic interest of Carmen's love affairs. The streets of the city, the smugglers' lair in the canon, the inn where the contrabandists gather, the bullring, and dose's home farm are the principal localities of action. A great many picturesque details add to their liveliness, and humor is introduced by homely incidents on the farm and at 'the inn". The bull fight is presented from actual combat. This picture is the second of the William Fox photo-plays to be. introduced to the Dunedin public, and as the first (' The Plunderer '), which was based on an ordinary subject, proved a decided success, it is confidently expected that • Carmen ' will take it's audiences by storm. Described as a masterpiece, if features Miss Theda Dara, an actress who has risen to the leading rank at the; Theatre Antoine, Paris. It is stated that no expense has been spared in this production of ' Carmen,' the best directors and artists having been engaged. It is also claimed that the picture is elaborate in detail, and that the effect of the whole is spectacular and unusually magnificent. 'Carmen" will be screened at the Grand Theatre on Monday next for the first time. Another feature of the entertainment will be selections from the music ■ of the opera
